The Dish, without the fish.

Kimly is a Vietnamese-American singer/songwriter from Orange County. Is she the melancholy indie, coffee shop girl with a soothing, airy voice? Not quite.  She is pop rock, big sound, big vocals, packed in a little body. “I didn’t expect that voice to come out of her,” is the common reaction of audience members. As Harriet Shock, a platinum recording artist put it, Kimly is “[an] adorable, talented and fabulous performer!”

Kimly is currently working on her next digital release, soon to be debuted early summer of this year. Though writing laid back tunes to the beat of her heart is still her forte, Kimly is switching gears full throttle towards a bigger, more produced sound. Her upcoming single, “Wreck,” will premiere the side of her writing that she has been waiting so long to express. “My guitar and I alone just won’t cut it anymore,” Kimly admits. “Not that I don’t love folk, but I’ve gotten to the point where everything I write and sing sounds like folk to people, no matter how much I try to change things up. I think I’ll try incorporating African rhythms and Gregorian chants next time.

Music, especially songwriting, has always been a driving passion in Kimly’s life. Her first song was “written” before being able to utter her first words. Repeated so many times, her mom began singing along. In her adult life, Kimly became a proud member of a long established Vietnamese choir, Ngan Khoi, where she later became one of the founding members of Song Xanh, a youth subdivision of Ngan Khoi. Thereafter, Kimly branched off to further pursue her solo career, performing bi-monthly as one of Live OC Magazine's artists over a span of one year’s time. In 2008, Kimly released an EP entitled, “Good Evening,” produced by TK Gardner. Since then, she has been performing at various venues throughout California, from San Jose to South Orange County. In May of 2010, Kimly was honored to be invited to play at a LAWiM (LA Women in Music) event.

Kimly plans to use her music as a means to send a resounding message of encouragement, positivity, and most importantly, love. Although, “Wreck,” may sound contradicting, it is only the first of many on her upcoming album. Tracks such as, “Shake,” “How We Communicate,” and “Let the Loving Start,” challenge people to step outside of their comfort zone, to “show some love,” and “shake the world with it.” “I truly believe that we ‘have the power to make anything change,’ as long as love is our motivation.

Be on the lookout for Kimly’s new single, “Wreck,” due early summer 2011.
